The current market in multivitamins is saturated with various brands and formulations that is confusing for anybody. To make it easier for shoppers, manufacturers have come up with the idea to label their products according to targeted age group, the gender-specific needs that it addresses, and sometimes even having a brand tailored for groups of consumers who have a specific condition such as diabetes and hypertension.
However, a lot us will find brands that offer generic benefits. For purposes of comparison, I have an example below of two “unlabeled” adult multivitamin products currently available in the market:
Nature’s Way Multivitamins
Neovitin Multivitamin
Looking at the ingredients of both brands, we will notice a number of similarities such as folic acid, biotin, vitamins A, C, E, B6, and B12, the minerals calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, and selenium. These are some of the standard supplements that our body needs and that means anyone can take it. But they each have key ingredients that are not found in the other, which could only mean that they are somehow targeted to different consumer groups. Some ingredients, when combined, can complement each other to give us the desired effect or even enhance its potency. While some, however harmless they may be by itself, may cause a reaction when combined with certain foods or medications. Therefore, it is best to consult with your physician on which multivitamin supplement would be suitable for us (USFDA, 2017). This applies whether or not we are diagnosed with a medical condition.
