The Ways of Meeting Oppression
Martin Luther King, an avid proponent of black emancipation, identified three ways through which individuals can respond to oppression. He detailed the principles in a speech that was intended to address the situation of black folk in the Montgomery Bus Boycott rally. To begin with, Dr. King prevailed that in responding to oppression, the oppressed engaged acquiescence. Acquiescence is manifested when the oppressed resign themselves to the prevailing situation (King, 1984). This occurs because of the freedom of exhaustion. It is observed when one is forced to repeatedly bear the burdens of oppression until they give up. The next response comprises physical violence and corroding hate (King, 1984). This response is a short-term solution to oppression. Essentially, the employ of violence in responding to oppression is an immoral concept. This method does not appeal to the understanding of the oppressor but rather breeds pervasive bitterness (King, 1984). The last form of response to oppression is the nonviolent resistance.
