The lyrics of Donna Summer’s song entitled “She Works Hard for The Money” certainly speaks to the contents of the unit which is capitalism. The song describes a woman who has been working hard for 28 years already to survive (Rubin and Melnick, 2001). She tries to save as much money as she could, but it does not seem enough to help her get out of poverty. Nonetheless, the woman also knows that she cannot afford to give up and be lazy because working hard is the only way for her to keep on surviving. This is very much connected to capitalism because this woman is an employee of businesses being owned by private individuals and not by the government. Unfortunately, these owners of businesses are also too greedy and selfish because they want to have their employees overworked but underpaid. This is the reason why it should not be surprising anymore that despite working hard for 28 years already, the woman in the song has yet to experience any improvement in her life.

I can also connect my work experiences to capitalism and to the lyrics of this song. I can relate to the woman in the song who just keeps on working hard to earn money. I have the same mentality as a worker because nobody is going to give me anything for free in this world. I have already accepted the fact that if I do not work hard and give my best every day at work, I am not going to eat. I also have my share of experiences working for companies that exploited me by making me work hard but not paying me fairly. This is the reason why once I am able to save enough money from my jobs, I am going to set up my own business and be my own boss because I have gotten tired and frustrated already of the same unfair treatment that I am getting from these greedy and selfish businesses. Once I am the boss of my own business already, I can do whatever I want, but I promise not to make the same mistakes that those greedy and selfish businessowners did.
