Some of the recent DoS attacks include the following companies:
- In Feb 2020, The Amazon Web Service was attacked. A customer was targeted.
- GitHub, recognized for its millions of developers, utilized an online code management service. It was targeted in February 2018 for its excessive volume and use. A client was also the goal.
- In March 2018, an Undisclosed NETSCOUT client was attacked. A customer was targeted.
- In October 2016, Dyn, which hosts Netflix, The New York Times, Visa, Amazon, and PayPal, attacked. The target here was the customers.
According to the Securityweek article, “in combination with direct assaults and reflection attacks, experts have calculated that the internet agonizes an average of 28,700 distinct DoS attacks every day (Felter, 2020).” This would be 1000 times higher than earlier projections. ” The fact that the number of attacks is 1,000 times greater than previously predicted is striking.
The following are some of how h DOS attacks can be prevented:
- Prevent spoofing by verifying that traffic has the source address which matches the list of addresses for the stated site of origin.
- Broadcasting limit: Many attacks are transmitting demands, escalating the attack on all network equipment. Attacks can be disturbed if the broadcast transmission is limited or stopped whenever feasible. Users can also switch off the echo and charging services if possible.
- iii) Simplified reaction to incidents: If DoS attacks are found, your security team can respond quickly by improving the response to incidents.
- Endpoint protection: Ensure that all terminal points are patched so that known vulnerabilities are eliminated.
