Importance Of Representation In Behind Camera

Representation and diversity are important aspects of any production company such as Hollywood. Portrayals of minorities such as students, races, gender in the media affect how the public views them and their views. The success of great movies such as “Blank Panther” or “This changes Every Thing” sent a great message on the significance of representations in Hollywood and other pop culture aspects. Representation is done behind and in front of the camera. Typically, representation behind the scenes is important as it shows case filmmakers that would not be seen otherwise. Hence, this paper describes the importance of representation behind the camera.

Firstly, representation behind the camera enhances gender equality. Before the advent of diversity, most women were misrepresented in the movies industry. Most jobs promoted occupational segregation when one group of workers, such as women of color, were more concentrated, leading to inequality. Additionally, the Hollywood industry promoted horizontal and vertical segregation where men or women held very high-status positions. However, the rise of representation behind the scenes illustrates how individuals greatly contribute to success in the production industry. 

Additionally, representation enhances creativity and decision-making. In diverse places,s, workers tend to have different opinions and perspectives on distinct matters that can help develop better solutions. Gender schema theory utilizes a cognitive approach to explain how individuals think and perceive concepts. It helps eliminate gender schemas where individuals believe they can work better than the opposite sex. Through representation, everyone gets a chance to air out their ideas, enhancing decision making. 

Representation helps minimize and eliminate the issue of gender segregation. Usually, the Television shows that children watch usually promote gender stereotyping whereby male actors are portrayed as superheroes (Crawford, 2011). On the contrary, another film portrays the female characters as superheroes. For instance, animations like “Frozen” appeal to young girls due to their appealing colors and cute characters. Hence, representation behind the camera help in eradicating the gender stereotypes that distribute roles between men and women. 

Furthermore, representation behind the scene allows members of minority communities to tell their individual stories, which help minimize the negative influences and expose individuals to wider culture and people (Crawford, 2011). Additionally, people can speak out against social injustices and discrimination, which can aid in changing customs, laws, and norms that harm women in society. 

Despite that, representation behind the screen help improves individual mental health. When people see that they are not recognized on the screen, it lowers their self-esteem; however, individuals can feel comfortable when observing familiar faces on the screen (Crawford, 2011). Individual differences also provide more opportunities for professional development. Organizations that incorporate methods and ideas from various perspectives build an inclusive culture that allows employees to serve as ambassadors. 

The organization attracts ambitious, bright, and varied employees uniquely. Employees are exposed to fresh approaches and skills to operate in a diverse working environment, which is incredibly fulfilling. Employees also can form worldwide partnerships with others. Employee morale would be boosted due to motivation, driving them to provide the finest services possible (Crawford, 2011). Coworkers will naturally learn about and admire each other’s cultures. This would foster trust and create a broader understanding of the world, filtering or combining the many viewpoints into new ideologies.

To conclude, representation behind the scene is significant. This is because it enhances equality and promotes cultures from different communities. Besides, people recognize and appreciate their differences creating a better environment. Therefore, the government and the educational sector should empower people to enhance representation in their various places of work.
