Effective Goal Setting

The moral compass for which my ethical standards are gauged, were inherited such as eye color, being right hand, or other traits passed down from parent to child.

The means of my standards how ever adapted over the years progressing and further maturing as society revealed inconsistencies, double standards, and other issues that questioned perceptions of right and wrong. Ethics is loosely defined as an interpretation of individual views of right and wrong (Rae, 2000).  My ethical outlook, I would like to think is simple and straightforward, but taking inconsideration the laws of man, and the laws of the land, it’s adaptive.

Student’s Ethical System

Given the collapse of the foundation of the financial industry within the United States that then metastasized fast to a crisis in line with economic and financial terms with the global proportions, the behaviors that involved both ethics and ethical perspectives in the performance of business is among the major factors that is affecting the economy (Wong & Beckham, 1992). The same could be attributed to the downfall of the students considering they fail to realize the significance of ethics in terms of cost and benefits.

Necessity arises from the students who are required to focus more on the personal ethical development for them to succeed in their lives. It is interesting that the observation on how students will fail because of lack of personal ethics. However, research shows that development of a student will require various aspects that would determine their performance. In highlighting the personal ethics of the student, two theories will help in guiding through: the theory of utilirianism and the theory of Ross’s prima facie dutie.

The development of a personal ethical persona makes it possible for the ethical decision to depend on the proposed action. However, the decision will weigh between the alternative chosen if its morally right will lead to a great ratio of benefits as compared to the costs. That is, the action that the student decides to use should result in high utility to him or herself and to the people who will be affected by the decision. Likewise, the personal ethics development will also be based on the utility model that may result to some ethical alternatives that are moral. However, it may not consider the justice and other principles embraced by the society.

Potential Effects of Student’s Ethics

Ethics is very important in conducting businesses especially across borders. For this reason, it is very crucial that all organizations should focus more on their ethical development. The individual members also should begin to look at their personal ethical development. This particular observation of the impact of ethics on business and organizational performance was first mentioned by Wong and Beckham (1992) many years ago. For this reason, appropriate to say that personal ethics has a significant role to play in the general performance and success of a business or an organization.

In coming up with an individual’s personal ethics, it is quite possible that those decisions that are made may be based on the expected benefits of the said decisions. This is to say that those decisions that may have a higher benefit for an organization may be considered ethical, even if they are not morally right. Personal ethics can have a distinct impact on an individual’s performance at the work place. They can result in ethical dilemmas that may influence professional ethics. Personal and professional ethics are often different from each other. This can pose a great challenge to the employees as their professional obligations may result in a violation of their personal ethics. Even though personal and professional ethics may overlap from time to time, they are often different from one another. In the business world, professional ethics overweighs personal ethics. This can be a point of conflict at the work place or any institutional settings especially if the two do not go hand in hand.

At times, some personal ethics may not be in line with the general ethics of the organization (Rae, 2000). For instance, one of my personal ethics is that I cannot lie to people intentionally. However, there are some situations within the organization where the truth may not necessarily be the best thing for the organization. As an employee of the organization, it is my duty to make sure that whatever I do benefits the organization. But as an individual, it may be hard for me to omit some elements of the truth for the benefit of the organization. This makes personal ethics a hindrance to performance.

Why Ethics are needed in an Organization

               Ethics are very important in a business or an organization. They are those values and principles that individuals use to govern their actions and activities. Organizations often have codes of ethics that govern the behaviors of the individual’s members. Ethics are important in an organization in that they help in managing the individual employees within an organization. The managers often use these ethics to determine the disciplinary procedures that should be undertaken. Ethics define those behaviors that are acceptable for all employees. An organization width high ethical standard often pushes its employees to achieve the same standards by working harder. Moreover, those organizations with a good reputation in terms of ethics and integrity tend to attract more investors and stakeholders, thereby improving its business. Ethics ensure that all employees meet the required standards in terms of the quality of their work.

Organizational ethics promote a healthy and positive corporate culture that promotes the morale of the workers and in turn increase retention and productivity within the organization (Trevio & Nelson, 2007).
Ethics are often integrated in an organization through their organizational culture and the codes of conduct. The organizational culture develops from the activities and processes of the organization. Codes of conduct are meant to be a guideline for the employees regarding how they are supposed to behave. These two are the general guidelines that integrate ethics within an organization. Even so, the application of ethics within an organization may have an impact on the society, the organization and the individual. For the society, ethics can help in ensuring that they receive quality products and goods. For the organization, ethics can create a good reputation of the company and in turn increase their profitability.  For the individual, ethics can influence their behavior, which in turn results in better productivity.
