One of the biggest issues with the current correctional system in America is the sheer number of criminals behind bars. Since the “war on drugs” was declared nationally in the early 1980s, national drug policies have created a state of mass incarceration in the United States. One of the biggest roadblocks in dealing with the mass incarceration issue in the United States is various sentencing laws that place non-violent criminals behind bars for exorbitant amounts of time. Bills were introduced in 2015 that would reduce mandatory prison sentence lengths for certain non-violent drug crimes. In a Bill introduced in 2015 as a proposed amendment to the Public Health Service Act, the Treatment and Recovery Investment Act would provide grants to improve the treatment of substance abuse disorders. This act would provide funding for treatment of those dependent on drugs. The act also reduces minimum mandatory sentences for non-violent drug crimes that do not include trafficking. In the past few decades, many states have tried to expand sentencing options in order to rectify some of the population issue. In a report released by the National Conference of State Legislatures, the researchers discuss ways in which various programs have been implemented in an attempt to create more effective sentencing strategies. While these smarter sentencing options are available, they are often implemented very often or effectively. Convicts currently in prison with a history of drug use are less likely by half to be receiving treatment as they were 25 years ago. While it is important to ensure public safety by keeping dangerous, violent, habitual criminals locked up, it is also important to be fair to everyone. The bills introduced could drastically reduce the over-inflated population of prisons, help avoid excessive sentences and also reduced recidivism. However, these sentence reductions would most likely not affect the vast disparity in the treatment of African Americans. In the first decade of this century, 88 percent of the 8 million arrests for marijuana were for simple possession. These numbers have only continued to increasing, costing states over $3.6 billion to enforce marijuana possession laws. George realized that, in the end, one of Hana’s wishes had come true. When they were taken from their home, George felt responsible for Hana. He blamed himself for her murder at Auschwitz, despite the fact that he had no power over their movement either.

In Charlotte’s Web, Wilbur, the runt of the litter, is saved from being killed at birth. He doesn’t understand his situation in life right away, but when it becomes clear that he is to be eaten. He says to Charlotte, “Were you serious when you promised you would keep them from killing me?” (White, 54) Though Wilbur is still threatened by his place in society, it is clear that he knows there is nothing he can do himself to prevent from being killed. Charlotte, from a different place, is able to step in and give Wilbur a voice.

Though they are from vastly different physical worlds, Hana and Wilbur are both very much affected by the physical worlds they inhabit. Born into a happy family, Hana was content in comfortable surroundings during her early childhood, but the persecution of the Jewish people in Czechoslovakia made these surroundings uncomfortable. When the Nazis began enforcing further prohibitions regarding Jews, Hana was uprooted from her home and forced to move several times. Like Hana, Wilbur is not able to control his physical surroundings and has little choice regarding the spaces he inhabits. Charlotte begins to weave words of praise for Wilbur into her web and his physical conditions change.

Wilbur lay down in the clean straw. He closed his eyes. The straw seemed scratchy – not as comfortable as the cow manure, which was always delightfully soft to lie in. So he pushed the straw to one side and stretched out in the manure. (White, 86)

Wilbur and Hana are outsiders in their societies. Both protagonists are shown, by words and actions of those around them, that their lives are less valuable than those of others. Stanovich presents several detailed examples in his argument concerning the flaws of human rationality. Therefore, the acceptance principle, or the concept of how biases affect our rationality in terms of decision making, will be the target concept of this paper. The first bias that will be discussed is distinction bias. This bias refers to the tendency for humans to be able to identify differences between two options more clearly when viewing the options at the same time, rather than viewing them separately (Hsee, 1998). For example, consider two hoodies, one is produced by Nike, and the other is a no-name brand, but both are made from the same material and are of the same thickness. In the store, consumers will often perceive the Nike hoodie to be of higher quality, and therefore able to perform its function (provide warmth) better than the no-name brand hoodie. However, if a test were done and a group of consumers were given both Nike hoodies and no-name brand hoodies and asked to rate them on warmth, both ratings would probably be about equal. That is, when the hoodies are considered alone, without the other beside it, they will be perceived to be almost identical in form and function; neither can be ‘better’ than the other. Another common bias is the confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency for humans to seek out, interpret, focus on, and remember information in a way that confirms what they already believe to be true (Plous, 1993). Confirmation bias is a huge hindrance in our ability to accept new information about the world and grow as human beings. Because if we are always focusing on information that confirms our own beliefs, even if those beliefs are false, it can be difficult to accept a competing view, even if that view is true. Confirmation biases can lead to heated emotional debates and severely inhibits the rational ability of humans as it is quite illogical to ignore information that contradicts what you believe to be true, even if what you believe is false. Examples of confirmation bias appear everywhere in our day to day lives and appear in almost every major political or social issues. Those who believe in ghosts, or the supernatural, will tend to read books and articles on ‘documented’ hauntings and ghost stories which further confirms their belief that ghosts and such are real. However, another individual who does not believe in the supernatural will spend their time reading about possible scientific explanations for strange events that lead people to believe in supernatural intervention.

The two biases discussed are only a fraction of the huge number of cognitive biases identified in the literature. Some other common cognitive biases are the negativity bias, the omission bias, and the outcome bias. The negativity bias is the psychological notion that individuals tend to remember negative events much more prominently than then they remember positive events. The omission bias comes up when considering two scenarios; if the outcome of individual action will cause harm, but the same amount of harm will be causes if the individual takes no action, the path of no action is seen by the individual to be the more moral decision even if both scenarios lead to the same amount of harm (action or no action). In his book, The Robot’s Rebellion, Stanovich states that people often violate rationality principles in every aspect of their day to day lives and he identifies biases as part of the cause for this. A Comparison of Poetic Devices in “The Lamb” and “The Tyger”

William Blake, the poet who created the collection Songs of Innocence and of Experience, is held in renown to this day as one of the most important poets of his time.  Two of his most famous poems, “The Lamb” and “The Tyger” represent very different visions.  When read together, as it could be argued they are meant to be, they create a complex world-view that acknowledges the existence of both good and evil in the world, and encourages readers to question the origin of both and how they might be interrelated.

Blake’s poem “The Lamb,” from Songs of Innocence, uses the persona of a child to emphasize the theme of innocence throughout the poem.  In the second stanza, near the end of the poem, the poet makes this clear in the line “I a child & thou a lamb” (17).  The persona in “The Tyger” is left undefined.  Although it can be assumed that the speaker is someone with more worldly knowledge based on the poem’s inclusion in the collection Songs of Experience, no direct acknowledgement of the age of the speaker is given.  The uncertainty that this elicits from the reader as to who is speaking reflects the uncertainty of the subject.  It’s clear who made the Lamb.  It’s less clear who made the Tyger.[“Write my essay for me?” Get help here.]

Interestingly, both poems utilize similar poetic devices, although to different ends.  Repetition is used in both “The Lamb” and “The Tyger” in different ways.  “The Lamb” repeats the line “Dost thou know who made thee” (2, 10) twice in the first stanza prior to giving a definitive answer to the question.  The second stanza also uses repetition, with both the first two lines, “Little Lamb I’ll tell thee” (11, 12), and the last two, “Little Lamb God bless thee” (19, 20) being used twice as well.  These lines, particularly when viewed alone without the context of the rest of the poem, serve to highlight the fact that both the question itself and its answer are straightforward and simple.  God made the lamb.  Repetition is used in “The Tyger” as well, but instead of highlighting naive certainty, it has the opposite effect.  The first stanza of “The Tyger,” which read, “Tyger, Tyger, burning bright, / In the forests of the night / What immortal hand or eye / Could frame thy fearful symmetry?” (1-4) are repeated almost verbatim in the final stanza to close out the poem as well, the one difference being the replacement of the word “Could” (4) in the first stanza with “Dare” (24) in the last, emphasizing the uncertainty of the Tyger’s origins.[Click Essay Writer to order your essay]

Apostrophe is another poetic device common to both poems. Both the “Little Lamb” (1) and the “Tyger burning bright” (1) are animals that cannot actually be spoken to as the two personas do.  Despite this similarity, the way in which the two poems’ personas speak to the animals in question is quite different. In “The Lamb” there is a certain level of certainty that is not present in “The Tyger.”  In the first, the poet questions, “Does thou know who made thee” (2), but later goes on to clarify, “Little Lamb I’ll tell thee: / He is called by thy name” (12-13), a direct allusion to Jesus Christ, or God.  In “The Tyger,” a similar question is posed near the beginning of the poem: “What immortal hand or eye, / Could frame thy fearful symmetry?” (3-4).  Unlike “The Lamb,” however, this poem from Songs of Experience does not offer a concrete answer.  The final two lines of the poem repeat, nearly word for word, this same question: “What immortal hand or eye, / Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?” (23-24).  The question is left unanswered.  Unlike the child’s persona who accepts, with appropriate innocence, the simple answer that God has created the “wooly” (8), “tender” (9) creature, the unnamed persona in “The Tyger” is unable to come to a conclusion as to who created the beast.[Need an essay writing service? Not only is the language used to describe the Tyger with its “fearful symmetry” (4) and “deadly terrors” (16) very different from the naive and optimistic word choice in “The Lamb,” but even the descriptions of its assumed creator are significantly different.  As the creator of the Lamb, God is “meek” (15) and “mild” (15).  The Tyger’s maker, however, has “dread hand” (12) and “dread grasp” (15) that allow its creator to “its deadly terrors clasp” (16).  It’s clear that Blake has misgivings about attributing the creation of such a deadly creature to what, in a state of innocence rather than experience, he conceives of as a benign and merciful God.  The fact that he makes a direct connection between the two poems in asking “Did he who made the Lamb make thee?” (20) leads the reader to consider how the idea of God changes based on whether the world is viewed from the point of view of an innocent child, or a speaker with more experience and knowledge.  The question, however, is left unresolved.  This speaks to the challenge of accepting the world, and the acts of good and evil associated with living in it, as one entity created by one God.  It also forces the reader to acknowledge that through experience of life, experience of evil is inevitable.
